How the Major Events industry is embracing sustainability

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need for businesses to operate in a more sustainable manner.

This has led to many industries taking steps to reduce their environmental impact and move towards a more circular economy. The major events industry is no different, with an increasing number of companies, including RGS Events Ltd taking steps to reduce their environmental impact.

So, what exactly is a circular economy? A circular economy is one in which resources are used and reused in an environmentally sustainable way.

Unlike the traditional linear economy, which relies on a "take, make, dispose" model, a circular economy seeks to keep resources in use for as long as possible.

There are many ways in which RGS Events is embracing
sustainability and moving towards a circular economy. One such way is by increasing the use of recycled materials.

Recycled materials can take many forms, including wood from old pallets or fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. Using recycled materials helps to reduce waste and preserve natural resources.

In our recent Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games project, we sourced recycled pallet furniture from a local business in the UK, The Pallet Studio.

A local family business run by Andrej and Rayanne, they take old wooden pallets and repurpose the used items into new pallet furniture.

It takes a day to make a set of furniture. The pallets need to be dismantled, cut to the correct size, assembled, sanded, heat treated to get rid of splinters, burnt to bring the grain out, treated with wood oil and finally branded and varnished for extra shine and protection.

The end result is an amazing, sustainable product which has been given a second life. This pallet furniture was proudly featured at multiple venues across the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The major events industry is increasingly embracing sustainability as part of its move towards a circular economy. This is being done through initiatives such as the increased use of recycled materials in the products sourced for these events.

These steps help to reduce the environmental impact of the major events industry and preserve natural resources for future generations.
