Flashback: Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games

As we edge ever closer to the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, we thought we’d share a flashback to our work on the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

With our headquarters located in Melbourne, this was as close to home as a Games could ever get for us. So we were absolutely thrilled when we were appointed as a Sponsor and FF&E Supplier to this amazing event.

We supplied FF&E to the Athlete’s Village in Parkville, the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) and all the Venues throughout Melbourne.

One of the special aspects of our job is getting the chance to work in some of the world’s most famous stadiums. None more so than having the opportunity to oversee a Bump In of our FF&E into the world-famous Melbourne Cricket Ground. As you stepped out onto the hallowed turf of the MCG, you could feel the sporting history which had taken place here.

In what was a particular highlight of the project, we manufactured the VIP Royal Box Chairs which were used at the Opening Ceremony. Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II sat upon one of our Royal Box chairs and officially opened the Games, that chair now sits proudly in our head office in Melbourne.

If Sydney 2000 was widely regarded as the best Olympic Games ever, Melbourne 2006 put on a truly spectacular event to be what was regarded at the time as the best Commonwealth Games ever.

We look forward to welcoming the Commonwealth Games back to Victoria, 20 years after Melbourne’s event. In the meantime, we can’t wait for the start of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games… 38 Days to go, but who’s counting.
